SINGAPORE – Predicting the next big growth industry is challenging, akin to guessing the next hot stock, according to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Speaking to 900 students at a dialogue event, PM Wong emphasized focusing on mega trends like digital technology, AI, sustainability, and the rise of Asia, rather than trying to predict specific industry shifts.
Key Insights:
1. Digital Technology & AI: Regardless of your field – law, finance, design, or architecture – familiarity with AI tools will be crucial. You don’t need to be a programmer to use these tools effectively, thanks to their growing accessibility.
2. Sustainability: As decarbonization becomes a global priority, expertise in this area will be highly sought after.
3. Rise of Asia: Understanding regional dynamics in Southeast Asia will open doors as companies expand in this thriving area.
Education & Skills Development: PM Wong highlighted the importance of equipping students with AI skills, aiming for 15,000 AI practitioners by 2030. This effort will attract global companies to invest in Singapore, creating more jobs and opportunities for all.
Personal Growth & Success: PM Wong encouraged young Singaporeans to define success on their own terms, emphasizing the importance of finding meaning and purpose in their endeavors.
